After 1933, German scientists, artists and cultural workers found refuge in Turkey in the face
of Nazi persecution. After Turkey declared war on Nazi Germany in August 1944, hundreds
of them were interned and considered "Haymatlos".
Kemal Yalçın had to leave Turkey after the 1980 coup and has lived in Germany since 1982.
Since then he has been "Haymatlos" himself. In his book of the same name, he describes
what it means to be homeless.
